While getting married in the Smokies of East Tennessee is a magical moment in your life, you need to make sure you understand the state laws and requirements for a marriage license before your wedding. You cannot get married in Tennessee without a license obtained from a County Clerk (see County Clerk locations at the bottom of the page).

You will need to bring:

* Proof of social security number - either a social security card or driver's license containing your social security number.

* Either a state-certified birth certificate, driver's license, or state-issued ID.

For Legal Aliens who do not have a social security number, you will also need:

* Resident Alien card or a valid passport and American visa with valid expiration dates.

You must know the following:

* Parents full name with maiden name of mother.

* Parents state of birth and address (if living).

* Applicant's number of prior marriages and the date the last marriage ended (if applicable).

There is no required blood test and no waiting period; you receive your license the moment it is filled out with all proper requirements by the

County Clerk.

Marriage License Fees:

* The marriage license application fee in Tennessee is $93.50 - $99.50. We except credit cards.

* A $60.00 discount on the marriage license fee may be applicable if the couple complete a pre-marital preparation course in the year prior to the application date. See for more information.

A marriage license is valid for 30 days after it is issued by the County Clerk and can be used outside the state of Tennessee (although it must be brought back to the Tennessee clerk's office that issued it after the wedding), but you must get married within those 30 days for the license to be valid. After 30 days, you will need to repeat the process with a new license.
